Initiatives & Impact

At Guesthouse Diabatalo, we believe in participation. Together with villagers, partners, and friends, we set up small-scale, practical projects that make a direct difference in Abéné and the surrounding area.

Agro-social garden project in Guidimbe, Abéné (Southern Senegal)
Le Louma Ékafè is a garden and food project where we grow vegetables and fruit, keep small livestock, and collaborate with local families and students. Our goal is healthy nutrition, sustainable employment for women, and a resilient community.

What we do

  • Develop sustainable cultivation and irrigation

  • Create work and learning opportunities for women and young people

  • Keep healthy food affordable for everyone

Why this matters

  • Increased food security in the village

  • Extra income and skills for women

  • Better opportunities for young people through hands-on learning

Road improvement to the beach

Together with villagers, we started a crowdfunding campaign years ago to repair a damaged stretch of road. It was a great success. The public road from the village to the beach—where we live—is now being completely renewed, including drainage. A local initiative that showed what’s possible, after which the government scaled it up.

Results at a glance

  • Damaged road section repaired with the community

  • Ongoing renewal of the public road with proper drainage

WakaWaka lights for schools

Through the WakaWaka Foundation, we were able to distribute 1,178 solar lamps to five schools without electricity, including those on the Karone Islands. Teachers also received tablets with USB ports. Studying in the evening became safer and homework more manageable. The letters of thanks afterward were heartwarming.

Result in brief

  • 1,178 lamps distributed

  • 5 schools reached, two secondary and three primary

  • Teachers' tablets with USB connection

  • Better study conditions in the evening

Local football tournaments

Adgaly is the president of the local football tournaments and helps resolve any pitch issues fairly and in good spirit. Each year, we donate football kits, often from the Netherlands. This year, we’re receiving 15 boxes of kits from FC Emmen, which recently changed sponsors.

During the regional tournament—usually held in the rainy season and school holidays—we join villagers in sponsoring staple foods and drinks such as rice, oil, sugar, and water sachets. Sport brings people together, and with this support, everyone can take part.
